Where is
Galloway?
Galloway is in South-West Scotland,
2 hours' drive from Glasgow and from the M6 motorway at Carlisle.
From England, join the A75 signposted Stranraer just after you cross the Border at Gretna. From Ayrshire
and the Central Belt, take the A77 coast road signposted Stranraer.
Petrol and services
Petrol is available at Dumfries, Kirkcudbright, Creetown, Newton Stewart, Bladnoch near
Wigtown and Stranraer. Please note, however, that, with the exception of Dumfries, there is no 24-hour filling station. Petrol
stations in Newton Stewart and Stranraer remain open until 10pm.
Shopping
The main centres for shopping in Galloway are Castle Douglas Food Town which has a Tesco supermarket (not
24 hours); Newton Stewart which has an Aldi, a Sainsbury's and a Co-op and Stranraer which has a Lidl, Tesco and FarmFoods
store. All Galloway's towns have a range of independently owned shops, giving the area's High Streets a unique feel
different to the corporate High Streets found elsewhere.
Medical facilities
Dumfries and Galloway is served by two main hospitals, the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary in Dumfries
and the Galloway Community Hospital in Stranraer. There is also a smaller community hospital with restricted hours in Newton
Stewart. Newton Stewart also has a medical centre.
