Visitor Information

The Wigtownshire Chamber of Commerce operates Visitor Information Points (VIPs) in the Mid Galloway Area. These are Chamber member businesses which offer tourist information where you see this sign displayed.

VIPs are based in Wigtown at Machars Action, The Galloway Osprey Visitor Centre in the County Buildings and Hillcrest Guesthouse, also in Wigtown.

A Visit Scotland Tourist Information Centre is located at Dashwood Square, Newton Stewart and is open during the summer months only.

Where is Galloway?

Galloway is in South-West Scotland, 2 hours' drive from Glasgow and from the M6 motorway at Carlisle.

From England, join the A75 signposted Stranraer just after you cross the Border at Gretna. From Ayrshire and the Central Belt, take the A77 coast road signposted Stranraer.

Petrol and services

Petrol is available at Dumfries, Kirkcudbright, Creetown, Newton Stewart, Bladnoch near Wigtown and Stranraer. Please note, however, that, with the exception of Dumfries, there is no 24-hour filling station. Petrol stations in Newton Stewart and Stranraer remain open until 10pm.

Shopping

The main centres for shopping in Galloway are Castle Douglas Food Town which has a Tesco supermarket (not 24 hours); Newton Stewart which has an Aldi, a Sainsbury's and a Co-op and Stranraer which has a Lidl, Tesco and FarmFoods store. All Galloway's towns have a range of independently owned shops, giving the area's High Streets a unique feel different to the corporate High Streets found elsewhere.

Medical facilities

Dumfries and Galloway is served by two main hospitals, the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary in Dumfries and the Galloway Community Hospital in Stranraer. There is also a smaller community hospital with restricted hours in Newton Stewart. Newton Stewart also has a medical centre.
