Welcome to Galloway
Welcome to the Real Galloway Tourist Route website which has been set up by The District of Wigtown Chamber of Commerce to promote Galloway amid ongoing concern that the official Galloway Tourist Route misses out most of Galloway and sends visitors into neighbouring Ayrshire instead!

Now, we've nothing against Ayrshire, but we think it's a real pity that anyone following the official signposted Galloway Tourist Route from the Border at Gretna leaves Galloway north of Castle Douglas on the A713 and misses out on all that Galloway has to offer.

For example, there's the picturesque artists' town at Kirkcudbright, Scotland's National Book Town at Wigtown, the mediaeval city of Whithorn, the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland which pre-dates Iona by 300 years; world-class mountain biking trails in Britain's biggest forest park; Scotland's Land's End at the Mull of Galloway and, of course, the beautiful Galloway Hills and mile upon mile of stunning coastline.

For visitors from England, we're much closer than the Highlands. In fact, we're just two hours from the M6 motorway at Carlisle, yet we're a world away in terms of tranquility and the natural beauty of the area. Galloway has the lowest population density of anywhere in Britain which makes it a haven from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

If you are coming from England, the Real Galloway Tourist Route starts in The Stewartry. Follow it through The Machars and The Rhins all the way to Stranraer! From Ayrshire and the Central Belt, take the A77 coastal road to Stranraer and begin the Real Galloway Tourist Route trail from there all the way to Castle Douglas.

A list of accommodation providers including self-catering and camp sites can also be found by clicking the link.

We look forward to welcoming you to Galloway soon!
